One implication of this story is that the universe is cyclic in nature. ‬‬Big Bang, to heat death, to Big Bang. Of course, like all great stories, it’s open to interpretation. It’s a mystery as to what might have caused the Big Bang. But lately, we’ve made strides not even toward an answer, but toward better questions. In physics, the legacy of the twentieth century is two models, which are seemingly irreconcilable. Relativity, which beautifully describes huge objects, and quantum theory, which beautifully describes tiny objects. The problem is that these two theories are mutually exclusive and there’s no way for them to “meet in the middle”‬‬. But at the quantum scale, tiny little particles can pop into existence and equally mysteriously vanish.‬‬

Even more magically, the entire universe—the earth with all of its mountains and oceans, the sun, our galaxy with its hundreds of billions of stars, and all the hundreds of billions of galaxies. Everything was once smaller than a single electron.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ When the entire universe was tinier than a single electron, quantum physics might’ve ruled. And at that tiniest of scales, the universe might’ve just popped into existence, which from our side looking back in time, might have looked an awful lot like the Big Bang.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Asimov was also interested in ethics regarding technology, and assuming that robots become artificially intelligent, coined the Three Laws of Robotics:‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬1.A robot, through action or inaction, must never allow harm to come to a human.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
